Single jersey fabric is a common starting point for T-shirt development, but the name alone is not a complete buying specification. A useful brief connects the knit construction to the garment, then records the measurable details that the sample must prove.
What is single jersey fabric?
Single jersey is a single-knit construction with a distinct face and reverse. The final appearance and handle still depend on the approved composition, finished GSM, usable width, colour, and finish. For that reason, a reference photo can support a discussion, but it cannot replace a written brief or a physical cutting.
What to include in a T-shirt fabric brief
- Construction and composition: state single jersey when it is fixed, then add the target fibre percentages and any permitted blend range.
- Finished measurements: record target GSM, tolerance, usable width, measurement state, and the method or condition used for comparison.
- Appearance and hand feel: describe the face and reverse, drape, coverage expectation, colour standard, and finish that needs review.
- Garment context: include fit, panels, neckband or other trim, quantity by colour, destination, and the sample decision-maker.
- Acceptance checks: name the method, direction, condition, and buyer limit for stretch, recovery, dimensional change, colour, or another critical requirement.
When should you compare interlock?
If the construction is still open, compare single jersey and interlock against the same T-shirt reference, composition target, GSM, usable width, colour standard, and approval checks. They are different knit constructions, so a similar fibre blend or product name is not enough to predict the sample result.
